Can you believe it’s nearly September?! The temperatures are starting to dip, the leaves are starting to turn, school has started back up, and the Pumpkin Spice Latte will be starting to make it’s way into the hearts and stomachs of many.

As with the change of any season, fall brings a whole gaggle of new trending search items. In-season produce, upcoming holidays, and popular fall pastimes all influence readers' searches in September.

Ready to jump in? Let's do it.

Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, especially when they're juicy and in-season! September is the perfect time of year to start formulating those apple-centric recipes, as searches for apple recipes start to spike this month. Those vibrant yellows, greens, and reds are sure to create a beautiful and festive dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert.

You could even incorporate some of last month's back-to-school trends into your apple creations, as these searches are still trending this month. Easy apple after-school snacks, on-the-go apple breakfasts, and quick and easy apple lunch ideas…the possibilities are endless with this wünderfruit!

Good Habits/Being Active

Because the weather is starting to dip, it makes sense that people are looking to make good habits by being active outside. Hiking, exercising, biking, pumpkin picking - people like to get up and move this month!

How does this apply to food bloggers? Think of healthy ways your readers can fuel their good habits. Even better, create recipes using in-season ingredients that can be brought along on these fun outdoor activities. I adore Cookie & Kate's What's In Season? series to help me figure out what produce is at its peak during the month. Among my favorites that are in season in September are broccoli, carrots, and fennel.

Trail Mix

Going along with the whole good habits thing, searches for trail mix spike this month. As the name implies, trail mix is perfect for hiking during the cooler September days, but it also make a great school snack for the kiddos!

Personally, I love the posts that give readers a few different seasonal mixes. Pumpkin seeds, pumpkin spice seasoning, and dark chocolate chips or almonds, craisins, white chocolate chips, and walnuts…the combinations are truly endless. Better yet, get your readers involved in the recipe creation magic and challenge them to create their own fall-themed trail mix and to share it on social media!

Fall Holidays

It's (almost) the most wonderful time of the year! While it still may feel a little early to start thinking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, would you believe that searches for recipe ideas are already starting?! Here are some dates to put on your editorial calendar:

  • Labor Day: Monday, September 4
  • Canadian Thanksgiving: Monday, October 9
  • Halloween: Tuesday, October 31
  • American Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 23

Because it's coming up so soon, let's focus on Halloween for a second. According to Pinterest, there are over 1.2 billion Halloween pins on Pinterest. Billion. With a B. It's important to keep this in mind as other bloggers will start producing seasonal content as well. But as Cassie Johnson from Back to Her Roots said on our FBP Community Podcast episode, you have to ask yourself what posts can be supremely helpful to your readers. What can make your content stand out and be supremely helpful amongst the billions of other Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas ideas on the internet? It's never too early to start asking yourself these questions as we head into the fall and winter holiday season.

Some ideas: slow cooker recipes, soups, casseroles, Instant Pot recipes, one-pot meals - basically any recipe that will give you that “hug in a bowl” feeling. smile
